Investigating Trip to Quito and Cuenca...retire?

Hi All, I'm arriving in Quito on May 2nd late in the evening. I'm a senior traveling solo to check out the possibility of living In Ecuador. So I'm wondering about location for walking and seeing the city:
1. I found this Hostal: Protected content in the old town.
Would this be a good location or do you have other recommendation?

2. What is best airline for me to fly to Cuenca or should I take the train?

3. Is there a good tour company you recommend for local day tours of Quito as well as jaunts to surrounding area? I don't want to rent a car and would enjoy meeting up with fellow wanderers.
Any other tips/suggestions are welcome.
