Rio Neighbourhoods - for young family (Rio de Janeiro)

Hi, my family and I (wife and 2 beautiful girls 1 and 2 yo) are moving to Rio in Jan/Feb Protected content . I'm in Rio having a look where to live with a local II know and I really like Jardim Botanico and the back of Lagoa or Humaita where its green and cobbled, seems local.
We have been around but being new and excited, can anyone let me know if they think an apartment in say Jardim Botanico is safe to live for a young family, mainly for my girls? I really don't want to be in a gated community in Barra.
