Security for family moving to Rio (Rio de Janeiro)

We are considering a corporate move to Rio and have precious little information to start making a decision with. How bad is the crime in reality? Are children and or executives really under threat of kidnap for ransom.

What is the cost of living like? What is the education system like? How great is the family lifestyle? Or, is it more of a singles place?
