Semester off (Rio de Janeiro)

Hey guys,
I'm a student at UC Berkeley currently taking a semester off here in Rio. The goal for the semester was to live and work and "make it" in a foreign country. To be honest, I didn't expect the language barrier to be so stark.

I've been here for a week now, and am looking for a job, an apartment, friends, etc. I study CS and have a fairly impressive resume, and can pretty much code anything. I am TEFL certified to teach english. Right now I have found a temporary flexible living situation.

I was wondering if anyone had some advice to make it here, short term (anywhere from Protected content and if anyone had any connections in the way of teaching english, the tech industry, housing, etc.

Advice, connections, a pub buddy, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nishok

PS Portuguese sounds incredible, but would you recommend I try to take a really expensive intensive class for not that long of a visit?
