Getting an Italian Drivers Licence (Rome)

Hello!
I have had a Canadian licence for over 10 years. I had been living in Milan with an international driver's permit, but that has expired and I have just recently married and moved to Rome to settle with my husband and am looking into getting an Italian drivers licence.

Seems a bit complicated to me, they told me I have to enrol in an autoscuola. Also, where can I get that medical certificate needed for the application?I don't understand why since I can drive, I would understand if I need to just take the tests.

Anyway, anyone been through this process and can shed some light for me? Anyone know any reasonably prices autoscuola's that might have English speaking staff? I speak a bit of Italian but its still quite bruttissima and would be more comfortable in English.

Anyway, any assistance or advice would be most helpful!
Thanks
Neeya
