Private Insurance Requirements for Expats in Italy (Rome)

Hi. I'm reaching out for some assistance with the private health insurance requirements for non-EU citizens wanting to move to Italy on a Visto per Residenza Selettiva o Dimora, or Elective Residency Visa.

My in laws are retired Australian citizens (financially self sufficient) and are wanting to spend a year in Italy.

Does anyone know what the minimum level of health insurance required is and the names of the insurance companies that provide this cover?

The Italian consulate offices in Australia aren't able to provide us with any clear information.

Also, would a one year fully comprehensive travel insurance policy with unlimited medical cover be acceptable?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Anthony
