On Saturday the 10th of May a new literary festival will take place in the heart of Rotterdam. The program includes performances by big literary names such as Joost Zwagerman, Abdelkader Benali, Manon Uphoff, Sanneke van Hassel and Ernest van der Kwast, but also young emerging writers like Elfie Tromp, Auke Hulst, Raoul de Jong, Ellen Deckwitz and Ninã Weijers.
Rotterdam’s literature scene has joined forces for the best literary festival in the Netherlands. Anyone who loves reading, writing, music or plain culture will get bang for their buck this evening. With countless lectures, international poetry, interviews, poetry slams, (mini) concerts and signing sessions, there is no reason to be bored.
Alongside established names such as Joost Zwagerman, Abdelkader Benali, Manon Uphoff, Sanneke van Hassel and Ernest van der Kwast, Woordnacht will also focus on young writers. Like debutant Niña Weijers who will be presenting new writing talent in Write Now! Elfie Tromp and Raoul de Jong will present a live theatrical literary lecture in the swimming pool of a rehabilitation clinic, and slam poets Ellen Deckwitz and Daniel Vis will recite their poetry on a couch in a house in the centre of Rotterdam. Also F. Starik and Auke Hulst will finally answer the age-old question: why do writers drink?
Paginagroots, Woorden Worden Zinnen, Poetry Circle 010, FRONTAAL, Het Nieuwe Dicht and Speyksessies will introduce you to the (yet) unknown talents that tightrope between literature, music, poetry and rap. Seems like a lot doesn’t it? No worries, there’s plenty of time to sit back and kick back in one of the many bars and restaurants in the heart of Rotterdam City.
