Apply J1 visa by myself? (San Francisco)

Hey, I just finished my school OPT with F1 visa
My previous employer would love to hire me again if I can transfer my visa in to J1; however, they told me they don't really do sponsor
Is there any possibility that I can apply J1 visa by myself and just ask my company do just letter support for me?
