sending a package from Ireland to Costa Rica (San José)

Hi. I am moving to Costa Rica and would like to send a package or two from Ireland. Has any of you done that; any recommendations? Local post office here can send a package up to 20 kg and i can send it to a friend's p.o box. I wonder how safe is that. Any tips much appreciated!
