Where to retire (San José)

My husband and I are planning to retire in either Costa Rica or Panama. i would appreciate any information about the pros and cons of living in Costa Rica, what areas you prefer, what we should know or do before we move (we have done quite a bit of research, but that doesn't compare to personal views). We are very active (running, biking, kayaking, snorkling, hiking), so we would love recommendations on areas that have a lot of activities. Thank you for any help.
