If you are looking for work there are a few things you need to be aware of.
Over the past few months I have been flooded by people looking for assistance in their search for a new position or better career opportunities.
Many have been out of work for some time and desperation and defeat is starting to set in. Many are very good at what they do, but not so good at selling themselves and finding work in the increasingly tough employment market.
Changes in the job search market mean it is getting increasingly harder to even get to an interview stage, let alone get selected.
With often hundreds of people applying for a single position the competition is fierce and strategies employed by many are often futile.
So what are some of the things you can do to overcome this:
UPGRADE YOUR CV. The first step in your search is usually to upgrade your CV. However you need to realize your CV needs to be a sales document. Ensure you have a professional looking PC that really sells you. You are after someone to “buy” you. You are not after a publisher for your life story.
DON’T SEND YOUR CV. Having updated your CV, put it away and avoid having to use it unless you really need to and only after you have exhausted all other avenues to promote yourself within a target company. Hiring managers use CV’s to disqualify you. Think of a beauty contest where they take the most beautiful women in the world then disqualify them for the slightest imperfection. They use the exact same process in selecting people for a role. You will require it at some point but hold back and keep your powder dry.
AVOID HR. HR is an unnecessary evil that a number of companies are looking to eliminate. HR can only say “NO.” They exists to keep gates closed, not open doors and most HR professionals are trained only to screen people out. They, along with the legal department, are all about protecting the company and are concerned with the safe, the tried and true. Sending your CV off to the HR department is normally a road to nowhere.
HEADHUNTERS ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS. “Headhunters find people for jobs….. not jobs for people”. While there are a few exceptions, unless a headhunter has a role that fits your profile in front of them, right now, do not expect too much from them.
LEARN TO NETWORK. This is not about connecting with everyone. You may have Protected content in your Linkedin network but how many of these can really help you in getting a new position? You need to learn how to search, target, connect and meet with people who will actually help you in your search. You also need to work out how to get in front of the person who really matters… the Hiring Manager.
DON’T USE THE “J” WORD. Don’t mention the word “job”. Telling people you are looking for a job will generally shut doors faster than anything. You need to learn how to avoid words that will shut the door and use words that open them and possibilities in other areas.
BRAND YOURSELF. Many people upgrade their CV but neglect other areas. You need to ensure your Linkedin profile, Facebook profile, photos, email signatures, etc. all sell you. Make sure there is nothing that might work against you.
HANDLING INTERVIEWS. Study up on interview techniques, questions you may be asked and how to answer them. More importantly think about the questions you might want to ask.
LEARN TO NEGOTIATE A SALARY. You usually only get one shot at getting a good salary. Saying “I want more” after you have just accepted a role or been there a few months is usually not an option. You need to get it right the first time.
