How safe is Sao Paulo for a traveller (São Paulo)

I am thinking about travelling to Sao Paulo this December. My friends keep telling me that this is a very dangerous place and that I should go somewhere else instead. Is it really that dangerous or people just exaggerate? Please advise me on this matter. What should I keep in mind about personal safety while in SP?
