Moving to Santos, SP. (São Paulo)

Hi everybody!
I'm Marleen from the Netherlands and I'm going to move to Santos, SP in september.
I'm so excited about this, but also a bit nervous. I want to find as much information as I can get about the country, the culture and being an expat.
I've never been to Brasil before. I wanted to do a course Portugese, I find a few courses in Sao Paulo. It's about 1,5 hour traveling by car. Is it safe to drive by myself or should I take public transport to the city?
I really want to meet new people, preferably in Santos or Sao Paulo.
