Sao Paulo weekend March 29&30 (São Paulo)

After a Brazilian expat colleague just told me "avoid going ANYWHERE alone" in Sao Paulo and I planned an spending a weekend after a business trip there, I 'd like to tap into our community for advice. I have meetings until the early afternoon on Friday the 28th and planned to fly back Sunday night. If traffic is such as mess to get out and in over the weekend and security too bad to explore the city by myself, is it better to just fly out again and stopover in - say - Miami to get some relaxing time in warm weather?
