When first moving to Washington, D.C., I didn't know many people outside of the office. InterNations has changed that with some exciting events.
Living in Savannah
Savannah is famous for its hospitality - in fact, its nickname is "The Hostess City of the South". Situated on the east coast of Georgia, it is all languid beaches, drooping wild oak trees covered with moss, and Southern charm. Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia, and was a key site during the American Civil War. The Historic District of Savannah is testament to the city’s past, while the Georgia Historical Society is a must-visit for any expat in Savannah who is a fan of American history. The city is also known for its religious prominence, as evidenced by the beautiful Cathedral of St. John the Baptist - the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah that dates back to 1873. So expats living in Savannah should definitively spend a bit of time exploring sights as the in order to get a feel for the city and get used to the balmy climate.

Moving to Savannah
Savannah is a typical Southern city, which some expatriates in Savannah may find it a bit of an adjustment. The climate is hot and humid, so expats moving to Savannah should make sure they have a good air conditioner, and a great iced tea recipe. The Baptist Church and other forms of evangelical Christianity are popular across Georgia, so it is worth learning some of the basics of these religions to avoid inadvertently causing offence. Before moving to Savannah, expatriates may also wish to prepare their stomachs for the rich southern food. Chicken fried steak, grits, and apple pie are staples of any Savannah menu and you will struggle to find better examples of classic American cuisine. If you have any questions about life in the southern states of the US, then you should sign up on InterNations. You can use the discussion groups and forums to get in touch with other seasoned expats living in Savannah or in other parts of Georgia.
Working in Savannah
Although it is a historic city, Savannah is as busy now as it has ever been. Savannah’s port has been a consistent feature of the local economy for centuries, while tourism, manufacturing and the military are the other major industries at play. Several multinational corporations have set up offices in the city, and the nearby Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport facilitates international business relations. If you are an expat planning on working in Savannah, make sure all your paperwork is in order and that you keep your visas and work permits up to date. US working visas may differ depending on your country of origin and conditions can change, so keep up to date with employment laws and make sure you aren’t working illegally.
