kayaking In Shanghai

Hi there- I am a new visiter/possible potential new resident of Shanghai from London ( see thread posted on Town Talk)I am a keen kayaker and see that there are plenty of canals in Shanghai as well as the outlying lakes. Does anyone at all kayak in Shanghai ??or know nice places to? How clean/dirty is the water in the canals? any advice or comments welcome.Thanks!
