Spousal Work Visa (Shanghai)

We are currently investigating an expat assignment in Shanghai, and have a question about the ability for spouses to work...we are currently in Australia, where it is tremendously easy for expat spouses to find jobs, but have questions about Shanghai/China.

I would be on a Z Visa, transitioning into Resident Permit (I believe), but we would also like for my husband (a Mechanical Engineer who does New Product Development) to be able to work - ideally as an Engineer.

Can anyone provide feedback on their experience with the liklihood of spouses finding employment and any other details/experience you may have?
