Would you recommend Shanghai?

Hi, my husband is thinking about taking an expat job in shanghai. Our baby son would be 1 year old then. But we have some concerns about the city. Could you clear them up for us?
1. Child obduction in china - is it also an issue for Caucasian kids?
2. How dirty is it really?
3. Apart from nightlife, bars and restaurant (which won't be our main activity with a baby), what is really nice in shanghai?
4. Do u notice Internet censorship in your daily surfing?
5. Can you get around with English at all?
6. Is it possible to travel the country on your own or do you have to take (bus) tours?
