Live in Shenzhen as Expats

Hello! I'm quite new to InterNations and I am not living in Shenzhen yet. But I'm gonna do it soon.
I've heard a lot of bad things about the city, robberies and threats towards expats.... but is it really like this or not? It is just rumors....? it depends upon the areas?

I will likely be moving to Shekou or Futian....any particular advice on these two zones? Any suggestions to help me choose it better?
