Is it difficult to get residence in Macedonia? (Skopje)

Hello everyone,
I've enjoyed reading many of your informative threads and it has helped create my current image of Macedonia. I am a U.S. citizen looking to take a long sabbatical (with my wife and 2 dogs) in a another part of the world. Many aspects of Macedonia intrigue us (cost of living, safety, culture, history, friendliness, food, natural beauty, climate, etc.) and it is currently the leading candidate for the country we would choose if it is an option. Neither of us has a criminal record and we can show strong financials.

So my basic question is if it is difficult to obtain a residency visa. Also, if the residency visa didn't work out, is it possible to leave the country every 90 days, and start the tourist "visa" deadline over each time.
