Life in Sofia

Hi Everyone-

I am new to the site and was hoping to get some advice from expats currently living in Sofia. There is a good chance I will be living in Bulgaria on and off for a year or so. I am from the U.S and have been to Bulgaria twice, but both visits were pretty short. My bf is from Sofia and speaks both English and Bulgarian, but I haven't learned any Bulgarian and that scares me. I remember from my previous visits feeling very isolated and alone. Obviously if we go I would look into taking lessons, but what else can I do? I would love any type of volunteer work, but I'm not sure if the language barrier would get in the way? I would love to hear about any advice or useful information.
