St. Petersburg. Challenge and Problem of Modernity

Last ten years showed multiple examples of highly controversial attempts to bring contemporary architecture to St. Petersburg. Amount of opponents is immense; group of fighters for contemporary architecture in the city is rapidly diminishing. What are the reasons? Lecture is planned as such an open reflection on these problems. Where are the roots of these failures? One can suppose that reason is not only inability of nowadays Russian elite to appreciate architecture of high quality etc but fore mostly in the character of the city itself. The only European city planned to such an extense, the major European classicistic metropolis, the city that was dominated by rulers' taste, the city that did not know real modernity in the 20th century - these and other aspects will be in the centre of the discussion in this lecture.
