neighborhoods and commutes (Tampa Bay)

I will be moving to Tampa in a few months for a job based in north Tampa. Though I've visited a few times, I don't really know the city or area well. Can anyone give me recommendations for neighborhoods/communities within Tampa or in the surrounding area? I am hoping to find an area with a true neighborhood feel, and would rather rent an old bungalow or a refurbished warehouse loft than live in a new apartment complex or house out in the suburbs. I am also hoping to avoid more than a 30 minute commute if possible. Any suggestions would be welcome!
