Podiumkunsten Emmakade hosts monthly performances in its warm and welcoming home theater in The Hague (Koningin Emmakade Protected content . Beautiful acoustics, an informal atmosphere and professional performers make for the perfect, light-hearted afternoon recitals. Following the concerts, audience members are invited to stay behind and join the performers for a chat and a good glass of wine.

The names of Roger Quilter, George Butterworth and John Ireland are less known in our regions than their German “Kollegen” from the nineteenth century, such as Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Wolf. Wrongly so, prove Jan Douwes and Andrew Clark in their performance of the English Artsong. The decennia before and after the year Protected content the heyday of the Artsong.
Douwes and Clark present the music of the English composers accompanied by the texts of ancient favourites such as Shakespeare and Herrick, as well as by the lines of contemporary poets such as D.G. Rossetti and A.E. Houseman. The themes vary from the love for Juliet to the premature death of youth.
The recital is an irresistable mixture of melancholia, the desire for love and the joy of life.
