Car Insurance for new residents (Toronto)

Hi to all.
My family and I will be relocating to Toronto from the Dominican Republic this coming Fall Protected content .
I have been looking into car insurance for some sample vehicles we plan to have while we live in Toronto and all rates come up to a +US$6,000 annual premium, mainly because we have no previous driving record in Canada.
Have any of you encountered this problem as well?
If so, is there an alternate (cheaper) way to get a more competitive premium-coverage?
Any company suggestions, insurance agent contacts or general feedback on this matter is highly appreciated.
