Is Yonge/Sheppard different from Downsview? (Toronto)

Hello, I will be taking a course at York University in Winter. I have never been to Toronto and I found some possible accomodations around York Downsview and around Yonge-Sheppard. The first one is closer to Uni but they've told me that there is nothing around that area. Is Yonge-Sheppard different from that? Is it more lively?
