German health insurance. (Trier)

I have just arrived in Germany. Last spring the Auslander office said I could buy health insurance when I moved here. Now that I am here, I am having difficulty finding a source of insurance. Any suggestions? What have others done?

I am no longer working for the military--only here as a resident and need health insurance to obtain residence visa. I am retired.
