SUNDAY 5TH JUNE
ANCIENT SHAMANISTIC ADVENTURE
ARIMA VALLEY
Today is in fun family hike with Shaman of the Carib Community, Cristo Adonis, to visit a site that has been used by Shaman's for thousands of years to commune with the spirit world.

We meet at Superpharm Maraval for 8:00am then head up the Highway turning north onto Demerara Road and continuing north on the Arima Bye-Pass Road where we will meet Cristo. We continue north on the Arima Blanchisseuse Road to a small river on the left.

We hike up the river and follow it for about 30 minutes before heading off to an escarpment in the forests that will take another 30 minutes. While the terrain is not flat there are no really big hills on the hike. The escarpment is an area of ancient Shamanistic Tradition that Cristo follows and he will demonstrate a smoke ceremony and discuss Shamanistic traditions and natural medicines here and on the trail. On the way back you will have an opportunity to swim in the rivers fun pools.

NOTES:
The hike will take about 1 hour each way with some time for the smoke ceremony and swimming in the river means about 4 hours in all. Bring enough food and drink for that duration.

Short pants are fine for the hike. If you worry about things scraping your legs then light long pants are OK, Jeans will be too restrictive and heavy.

Hiking / trail shoes or sneakers are recommended. Slippers are also not appropriate

All footwear will get wet and muddy

If you fall in the river or it rains everything will get wet so bring phones / cameras in dry bags or double zip loc bags

Adventurous kids are encouraged to join this hike but they have to be able to hike on their own and have a responsible adult in charge of them.

Make sure you leave a dry change of clothes and towel in the car to change into for the beach and for the drive home!

Price is TT$100 per person, family discounts for kids are available. You can pay on the day

Minimum of 8 and maximum of 30 persons

SATURDAY JUNE 11TH
ROCK CLIMBING
POINT GOURDE CHAGUARAMAS
Rock climbing is an amazing way to have a blast while experiencing nature in a special way, getting fit and bonding with family and friends! Or make new friends!

We meet in the grassed parking area next to Anchorage and a WASA facility for 11:00am. A 10 minute walk up a dirt road to the first climbing walls called Tester 1 and Tester 2. That’s exactly what we will do there; teaching you how to rock climb and rappel then test these skills on a small wall. You will climb rocks and roots to a tree in a climbing method called “top roping”. Then you will hook up to a rappel line and descend back to the road. We will work in teams to ensure safety and to support, cheer and help each other.

With confidence boosted and basic techniques acquired we will hike about 30 minutes to the eastern side of Point Gourde to Rory’s Glory. This is a bigger wall made of igneous rock covered by limestone, common in this area. Once ropes are set we will start Top Roping to test skills and get familiar with this face and to have FUN, FUN, and more FUN!!! Then we rappel Rory’s Glory.

If time is on our side we head over to even bigger walls and bigger challenges! Once all is done and smiles are permanently stuck to faces we hike about 40 minutes back to cars and head home.

After climbing we can recount stories of heroics over drinks at the Sailing Association's bar while some can take a quick swim

NOTES:
Everyone will provided with a helmet while climbing, however if you have a personal climbing, skating or bike helmet please bring it as you will feel more comfortable.

Serious climbers cut their nails very short, while we do not expect you to change fashion for us the shorter your nails are the better. Regardless of the length you must ensure they have no jagged edges.

A good pair of climbing, riding, sailing or workman’s gloves that have padded palms and fit snuggly are an asset for the rappels

Short pants or tights and a sporty top or jersey that fits well and leaves you flexible is a must. Loose or ill fitting clothes will limit your climbing ability and can be dangerous

It is very important to be hydrated and energized during the adventure, so ensure that you have food, water, and energy snacks for a day out. I can drink 2 liters and more during a day of climbing

Proper hiking shoes that fit well and have grips are recommended. If you have climbing shoes that is best; bring them along for the climbs. Slippers and hiking boots are not appropriate. Ensure your shoes are tied properly and do not have loose laces

If it rains everything will get wet so bring phones / cameras in dry bags or double zip loc bags

Adventurous kids are encouraged to join this adventure but they have to be able to hike on their own and have a responsible adult in charge of them.

Price is TT$150 per person, family discounts for kids are available.

Make sure you leave a dry change of clothes and towel in the car to change into for the drive home!

Minimum of 6 and maximum of 30 persons

SUNDAY 12TH JUNE
CUMACA CAVE:
The is a real adventure for active folks as it has devilbirds, a very deep cave and lots more.

As the drives are long its an early start with a meet at Superpharm Maraval at 6:30am. Depart and drive east past Valencia where we turn left into the northern range.

Located in the eastern area of the Northern Range, Cumaca is a small, sparse village, located an hour from the Eastern Main Road on a very rough road. The rugged beauty of the rainforested hills and valleys around you smoothen out all bumps along the way. The trail begins at what seems to be an abandoned road and has become only suitable for traffic of the two, four, six or eight-footed kind. If done at a reasonable pace the trail will take about two hours to reach the cave, however, with birding, nature viewing and other interesting stuff happening around you, it may take a bit longer to reach the cave. The last stretch of trail is usually very muddy so be ready.

The cave itself is made by a river that flows its length and the water gouged several small and massive caverns reaching deep into the mountainside. We put on head lamps and grab flash lights, wade into the river entering the first cavern where the loud clicks, screams and squawks of about four hundred “Devilbirds” or Oilbirds greet you. Spend some time here viewing these marvels of nature. Exploring further into the cave we will see massive chambers with stalactites, stalagmites, bats flying around you, and blind fish swimming about. One passage between caverns is very low and you have scrunch down with half your body in the river; a magnificent adventure.

The return is the way you came, and of course there is still lots to see on the return.

NOTES:
This is a moderate hike that will take about 2 hours each way and we will spend up to two hours in the cave, so we will be gone for about 7 hours with a lunch stop. Bring enough food and drink for not less than that duration.
Parts of this trail are usually over grown, so light long pants are recommended. This will be helpful in the cave also.

Rubber kitchen gloves are recommended to be worn in the caves to keep bird and bat poop off hands.

Each person must have a working flash light or head lamp with fresh batteries in it.

Bring hand sanitizers for use after the cave so lunch can be handled safely.

Hiking boots or trail shoes are recommended as the trail can get quite muddy and slippery. Slippers are not appropriate. Sneakers with good grip will work. I hike with keens or merryls or similar water shoes to use in the cave so hiking shoes remain dry.

The river gets to about 2 and a half feet deep.

If it rains everything will get wet so bring phones / cameras in dry bags and/or triple zip loc bags

Price is TT$125 per person.

Make sure you leave a dry change of clothes and towel in the car to change into for the drive home!

Minimum of 8 and maximum of 30 persons.
