Customs taxes on packages received from the US (Turin)

Has anyone discovered the secret to customs calculations? I have paid customs on packages that were my own, used clothes (as indicated by my Dad on the shipping form) and have not paid for other packages that contained new items. I would like to discover the secret to avoiding taxes before Christmas. Any tips/tricks any of you have picked up?
