Requesting Italian citizenship (Turin)

Hi, I was wondering if there are any Americans here who have gone through the process of requesting Italian citizenship? Specifically do you know if the federal background check is sufficient or do I need to get the state one also (I've been a resident in 5 different states so this would be a serious pain). If I do need to get it done who do you contact to do it? I cant go to CT, CA, NY, DC and AZ. I've looked all over internet but can't get an answer. HELP!
