Getting a 'patent' (Venice)

Hi,
We came to Italy from India last July, also have the permesso the sogiorno.
Now, we have a car, and I would like to drive it, but I am not sure if I can on my driving license from India, it is not an international license.
If not, how do I get a license here? I went to an auto scuola, but they suggested that I improve my italian first, as the test is going to be in Italian.
Any help will be appreciated!
