Questions on the process of getting a work permit (Vienna)

Well, I need some help. Desperately! The process for getting a work permit/red white red card has left my head spinning.

First, let me explain my situation. I'm an American here on the visa waiver program. I've been here for a month, so I only have 2 months left before I'll need to leave the Schengen zone.

I have a potential offer from an employer, and we're trying to work things out as to exactly how to go about applying for my work permit. My questions are:

1. Is there a difference between a "work permit" and the "red-white-red card"?

2. If I obtain the red-white-red card, do I need to then apply for a residence permit?
