ADVICE FOR 2017 MOVE TO LITHUANIA (Vilnius)

Hi,
I am an American in Chicago that plans to move for 1 year to Lithuania (Panevezys) in Protected content . Possibly longer. Solely to travel the country and neighboring countries.
And I need help preparing. Primarily I have questions about the Visa application, medical coverage / travel insurance, and drivers license. And I suspect there are other things that I have yet to consider that others with experience may share.
I will have assistance upon arrival with getting an apartment, car, etc., but the process to get a 1 year Visa is my biggest concern.
Anyone who has gone through this process that would be willing to assist in answering some of my questions, , would be greatly appreciated.
