Saulius Sužiedėlis
Professor Emeritus at Millersville University of Pennsylvania
The topic:
The International Commission for the Evaluation of the Crimes of the Nazi and Soviet Occupation Regimes in Lithuania: Past Accomplishments, Challenges Ahead
Other speakers will include:
Ronaldas Račinskas – Executive Director of the International Commission for the Evaluation of the Crimes of the Nazi and Soviet Occupation Regimes in Lithuania, Dr. Ilja Lempertas – Historian and Scholar of the Holocaust
Academic research and publications often remain in the ivory tower and do not resonate within society at large. Scholarly work is represented as an objective search for truth based on empirical evidence and consensus arrived at through dialogue and discussion among scholars based on verifiable evidence. Why then does collective memory often differ so radically from the academic narrative? What are the reasons for the continuing prevalence of denial and rejection of unpleasant aspects of the past? What can be done to diminish myths and misperceptions concerning the past without violating the integrity of accepted norms of academic research?
