Experience with building credit as non us-citizen? (Washington, D.C.)

Hi all,
I have just arrived in the US on a IR1 visa (husband is US citizen) and would like to build a credit score as soon as possible.

I have researched "credit builder loans" but from what I found so far, it looks like this would take about year in order to take effect.

Any experience / tipps anyone?
