Living in Wichita, Kansas

Witchita, "The Air Capital of the World", has a welcoming feel for expatriates and is home to communities from all over the world. The city is the largest in Kansas and provides visitors with a number of sights. Shopping lovers will enjoy a trip to the Towne East Square and Towne West Square malls, but one of the most popular destinations for expats and visitors alike is The Keeper of the Plains. Constructed in 1974, it is a 13.4-meter-high Cor-Ten steel sculpture of a native Indian which overlooks both the Arkansas and Little Arkansas rivers. However, sightseeing is obviously not all there is to life as an expatriate in Wichita. If you are struggling to adapt to living in Wichita, our InterNations members can help. On our forums you can easily connect with fellow expats and ask them about how they made the transition. Whether you want to know more about the US social security system or you need a language coach, they'll be someone available to point you in the right direction.

Working in Wichita

As the city's nickname suggests, Wichita is a place that has a history of aircraft innovation. To this day, Wichita's economy is dominated by manufacturing - accounting for around a fifth of all jobs. Small airline manufacturers Cessna and Beechcraft still operate factories in the city of their birth, but larger commercial airline producer Boeing is one of the region's largest employers. Expatriates will find working in Wichita an enjoyable challenge with many opportunities. In addition to manufacturing jobs, expats living in Wichita should find work available in the health care and education sectors. The hospitality trade is also big – this is the city that gave the world White Castle and Pizza Hut after all. If you're unsure what to expect in a new country, please take a look at InterNations Expat Magazine. It has been produced to assist people like you and features information on a large number of expatriation related topics.
