About India . . . Family Name Abbreviated - Why ?

Got this as reply from an Indian applicant from my Cold Call Training Club on LinkedIn after I asked them . . .

Question: I've seen your application to join and need your argumentation why I should let you in albeit your profile lacks full written First AND Last name which is required according to house rules ?

Answer: In India we generally use initials as all of us do not follow the family name system

Now I'm keen to learn why that is ? Historical background, development of society, etc. ?

Anyone care to educate me ?
