Absolutely shocking: Opium instead of child daycare in Afghanistan

Has anyone else heard of this? Just read a news article about it:

In Afghanistan it is apparently normal to give little children opium so they don’t disturb the adults while they have to work. The parents have little other choice, since there are almost no (affordable) daycare institutions.

If you give little children opium on a regular basis, it will lead to a lifelong addiction.. if you stop taking opium later you can’t think straight anymore..

The women there said that if they had the opportunity of putting their children into daycare, they wouldn’t need the opium and hence could break this cycle of addiction.
