Benefits of owning vs renting in Southern France

My husband and I are US citizens and thinking of buying a second home in Southern France. Does anyone know if there is an advantage to buying over renting other than the security of knowing you have your own place , flexibility & possible income opportunity? Are there any rights or benefits from local, national government that come with property ownership? Other benefits? Thanks for your help.
