Brahmacharya/celibacy ,denial or gaining

Brahmacharya ,the self imposed voluntary celibacy as espoused in Hindu philosophy, is it denial or gaining something greater or a latent desire to elevate oneself to higher consciousness of purity through short term sacrifice ?
