Britain in 10 days

Hello and thanks in advance for any responses -
I'm off to the UK in March of next year and I have 10 days there. I don't want an organized tour as I'd rather just rent a car and travel around by myself. I'm fairly friendly so I'm sure I'll get to know people.
I'd like to maximise my time by choosing historical significance and scenery over nightlife etc.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
