Can friendship withstand differing political beliefs?

Over the years, I've had different friends whom I lost because we made the mistake of discussing politics. I try to be tolerant and non-judgmental - and I tend to expect the same of my friends.

I have maintained friendships with people of different faiths, political beliefs and backgrounds. But on one or two occasions, the differences were so big, the friendships or love affairs simply could not withstand them.

Have politics ever destroyed a relationship you have had? If you manage to maintain a relationship of any kind in the face of such differences, how do you manage this sore point? Can you have a close friendship or love relationship with someone whose political beliefs are the opposite of yours?
