The arrest brings to an end one of the most shameful aspects of the Bosnian conflict’s bitter aftermath. Mladic faces charges of genocide over his onslaught on the UN-protected enclave of Srebrenica, and its ethnic Bosnian population in a bloody orgy of killing, rape and torture that lasted days.

War Crimes Tribunal judge Fouad Riad has described it as “unimaginable savagery – thousands executed and buried in mass graves, hundreds buried alive, men and women mutilated and slaughtered, children killed before their mothers’ eyes, a grandfather forced to eat the liver of his own grandson”.
