Does Expat Lit Deserve Its Own Shelf? Twitter Chat

Views

Greetings all!

Inviting you to join me for a live chat on Twitter May 29:

What defines the expat lit genre? Who are your favorite expat authors, and how is their work different from travel writing? If you're a writer, how is your own work different from travel writing? Or is it?

As an American in Istanbul and the editor of the expat lit collection Tales from the Expat Harem, I believe there are some important distinctions. Living for extended periods in foreign locales, expatriates struggle to reestablish themselves and find meaningful access to their new home. Travelers passing through often have the luxury to avoid the very issues of assimilation and identity that dominate the expat psyche. Any resulting writing reflects that.

I will guest host the Expat Lit #LitChat on Twitter, Friday, May 29th Protected content EDT). Please join us and share your expat reading and/or writing expertise! (More info and details how to participate: Protected content )

Whether you can join us or not, I hope you'll feel free to post your thoughts below for general discussion. I'll monitor and try to incorporate them in the three discussions (on Monday and Wednesday next week, same time, same place, as well as my own guest hosting).

Best,
Anastasia
