Does "old" furniture suffer from climate shifts?

Hey all,

Does anyone have any experience in moving old/antique Nordic furniture and paintings from a cold climates to a warm and humid ones - Denmark to Sydney in this case? The do´s and dont´s...what to be aware of etc.

Its not that many, just a few things of great personal value and I have been told that they suffer greatly from the climate shift.
