Driving / buying a car in China

Hello everyone,

My wife and I are planning a long-term Protected content trip in China this year. We would like to buy a van in China and outfit it with a bed, stove, etc. then drive it around the country.

I have read a bit around and know that it should be possible to get a China driver's license either by taking a test or by transferring a HK driver's license (which I could get in HK using my US driver's license), but I have not been able to find much out about buying a vehicle in China.

Does anyone have experience with this? I'm especially interested in the legalities of buying, registering, insuring, etc. I will only be on a tourist visa.
