Expat or not?

Hi everyone,

I have been living in the Netherlands for 5 years this year and when I go home to Australia it is for no longer than 3 months. I have been told that this year I will become an expat, is this correct?

I have tried calling the consulate here in Holland and the Embassy in Berlin and London and am waiting to hear back from the embassy in Australia but so far no-one can give me a clear answer.

Normally this wouldn't matter however we are in a visa process with my husband and our 2 children and if I do become an expat I also need a need a visa to go back. It's all very confusing so any help or advice would be much appreciated!
