Crew members who have just spent eight months inside a windowless room in Moscow finally donned their spacesuits and took their first steps outside this week – onto the surface of Mars (well, onto a lab-based facsimile of the Martian surface, to be honest). The Protected content experiment, including studies into the effects of isolation, is hoped to feed into planning for a true Mars mission one day.
