Getting started in New York City

Hi everyone, I'm really keen to move to NYC for a 6 month stint and im just trying to gather some information on the best way to go about./realist ideas ect. My back ground is financial planning and my partners is teaching.
I'm open to do anything and so is she. I just want to hear about the job market/hard to get work? Where to live? What the Aussie community is like over their? Any help would be great. I just need a starting point.
