Jinja
Located about 4 hours to the east of Kampala, Jinja is easily accessible and a great place to recharge, relax or take the plunge! Into the Nile that is! Jinja is famous for being the source of the River Nile. If you are looking for an adrenalin rush, Jinja is the place for you!

Rafting in Jinja

Nile River Explorers
I would advise booking rafting in advance. They also offer tandem kayaking on the Nile.

Lake Bunyoni

Bushara Island Camp
One of my most favorite places to stay in Uganda! Safari tents equip with everything you need for a quiet get away. Outdoor showers with hot water delivered daily, fresh food from local fisherman and farmers. Trees are labeled throughout the island with the names and uses, birds are plenty and you can try your hand at paddling in a locally crafted dugout canoe. You are also supporting a training program and education scholarship program for local adults and youth.

Gorilla Trekking
In Uganda, it is possible to spend time with Gorllas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The cost is $500 <USD> for a one day permit to trek. If you are staying in Uganda for more than 3 weeks, it will be possible to purchase your permits and do a self-created tour. Otherwise, it is highly advisable to book through a tour company. I have trekked in Rwanda, and have no experience with the tours.

Basic Information
Uganda Wildlife Authority is the agency offering the permit. Their site is full of additional information about trekking and other offerings.

Ssesse Islands

Experience life on Lake Victoria! The ferry is within walking distance from Malayaka House and you will feel worlds apart once you arrive on the big island, Bugala and the town of Kalangala. There is a pineapple farm you can tour, swimming <with a risk of bhilarzia> and 50 km of roads to walk or bike around. --This is a good trip if you are interested in taking any of the older kids on a holiday. There is swimming and it is not too costly for transport and accommodation.

Budget Option
Hornbill Camp offers space for tenting, dorms and bandas, as well as delicious, family style meals. Located right on the beach, they typically have bon fires at night. Call to book once you arrive.

Murchison Falls-Safari!
A favorite place to see wildlife in Uganda. Game drive in the morning and a boat trip up the Albert Nile to Murchison Falls in the afternoon. It is possible to hire a 4x4 and driver in Masindi if you want to create your own safari. They will have limited knowledge about the game, but will lower your costs.

Boomu Women’s Group
This is my favorite place to stay at Murchison’s. Located just outside the main gate, this group offers basic accommodations, community tours and cooking demonstrations. All of the revenue is put back into the community for education and development. Extremely welcoming and friendly!
